Hello Boulder

Runcie here . . . Some of the things I love about road tripping are the geography lessons, experiencing a diversity of cultures in the course of a single day, and learning about our nation's history.  For example I learned in the time it takes to read a billboard that Dwight Eisenhower was from the tiny town of Abilene, Kansas and that his presidential library is located there, a sleepy stop just off I-70 in the middle of the great plains.

Our day began in Topeka, Kansas where we had stopped just hours before in the middle of the night.  Kansas' capital city is the last real population center before Denver.  Since we had arrived in Kansas under the cover of darkness, our last visual images had been of St. Louis, Missouri which is a lot like home geographically.  It really was fascinating to discover our surroundings this morning . . . rolling prairie all the way to the horizons.

It wasn't long before we came to the giant windmills.

and then a little later, the amber waves of grain

Eastern Colorado begins like Kansas ends, but after an hour we saw Pikes Peak to the Southwest from about 100 miles away, and gradually the front range of the Rockies came into view.   We drove through temperatures of over 100 degrees most of the day, and it was even 97 when we arrived in Boulder in the late afternoon.  Amazingly enough, there is still snow on the higher peaks just beyond the front range.

We arrived at George's (my brother) house to a hearty welcome, and the cousins were fast at play.

After visiting for a bit, we began our evening walk into town to grab dinner.  90 degree temps in Boulder sure feel a lot more pleasant than the 90's in TN, and the scenery is amazing.

Just a little down the street with family in the foreground and Flat Irons in the distance.

Kids are all sleeping outside tonight . . . some are in hammocks and the younger ones in a tent on the balcony.  I will actually be sleeping in the open air outside since cougars and bears have both been known to wander the alleys near their house.  I'm actually looking forward to it.

Looking forward to the outdoors tomorrow.  Goodnight all.
